ROWORTH HEIGHTS

A Contemporary Chapter in a Historic Landscape

Roworth Heights represents a distinctive undertaking for VEDA MODERN: the creation of new mountain residences within the historic architectural fabric of Central City, Colorado.

Working within a highly regulated preservation environment required an approach fundamentally different from conventional residential development. Architecture, siting, scale, materials, and detailing all demanded careful consideration of the historic context while accommodating the expectations of contemporary mountain living.

For VEDA MODERN, those constraints were not obstacles. They became the framework for the project.

BUILDING WITHIN HISTORY

Central City’s architectural identity was shaped by the mining era—steeply pitched roofs, vertical proportions, narrow forms, ornamental woodwork, and buildings adapted to difficult mountain terrain.

Rather than imitate historic buildings literally, Roworth Heights sought to understand the principles that gave them their character.

The resulting residences draw upon the proportions and vocabulary of Central City’s historic architecture while incorporating contemporary construction, high-performance building envelopes, modern mechanical systems, and the comfort expected of a new home.

The objective was not to recreate the nineteenth century.

It was to allow new architecture to belong within it.

PRESERVATION THROUGH EVOLUTION

Historic places survive not simply because they are protected, but because they remain meaningful and inhabited.

Roworth Heights reflects VEDA MODERN’s belief that preservation and contemporary development need not be opposing ideas. With careful planning, architectural restraint, and respect for context, new construction can contribute to the continuing story of a historic place.

The project required sustained coordination with the agencies and preservation authorities responsible for protecting Central City’s architectural heritage—an experience that has become an important part of VEDA MODERN’s expertise in historic mountain development.

THE VEDA MODERN APPROACH

Roworth Heights embodies principles that continue to inform our work throughout Colorado’s historic mountain landscapes:

Understand the place before designing for it.

Respect history without simply reproducing it.

Use contemporary technology quietly and intelligently.

Allow architecture to contribute to a landscape rather than compete with it.

Roworth Heights demonstrates that the legacy of Colorado’s historic mountain communities need not end with preservation.

It can continue through thoughtful evolution.
